The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has denied reports that their star player Cristiano Ronaldo wanted to leave their World Cup camp in Qatar.

Media reports had earlier indicated that Ronaldo had told his manager Fernando Santos that he might leave Qatar after learning that he would be benched in their round of 16 tie with Switzerland.

The nation’s football governing body rebuffed the reports on Thursday, December 8, 2022.

“News released this Thursday reports that Cristiano Ronaldo threatened to leave the national team during a conversation with Fernando Santos, the national team coach.

“The FPF clarifies that at no time did the captain of the national team, threaten to leave the national team during the internship in Qatar,” read part of the statement.

FPF further added that the five-time UEFA Champions League winner’s commitment to the club is unquestionable.

“Cristiano Ronaldo builds up a unique track record every day at the service of the national team and the country, which must be respected and which attests to the unquestionable degree of commitment to the national team,” ended the statement.

The former Juventus and Real Madrid player made a cameo as a substitute late into the second half in Portugal’s 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland.

Ronaldo has come under heavy criticism in recent times, particularly after his viral interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan.

During the exclusive interview on Talk TV, Ronaldo disclosed some of the secrets about Manchester United which made the stakeholders at the club unhappy.

As a result of the explosive interview, Manchester United and Cristiano reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.
