A criminal gang attacked Mathare United forward Mark Khwasira on Wednesday night, January 4, 2023.
The Kenya Premier League (KPL) side released a statement on Thursday evening confirming the incident.
“We are both shocked and saddened to learn of the heinous attack on our player Mark Khwasira that occurred on Wednesday night as he was heading home after our league game against Ulinzi Stars.

“Mark was ambushed by a gang of two at Patanisho area in Kayole at around 9 pm and was stabbed twice in the abdomen as they attempted to rob him,” read Mathare United.
The club further divulged that good samaritans helped Khwasira, who is currently undergoing medical interventions.
“He was rushed to Mama Lucy hospital, where he is currently undergoing surgery.
“As a club, we would like to thank the first responders that performed first aid on him as well as everyone that helped in getting him to the hospital. We also thank in advance the doctors at Mama Lucy who responded swiftly,” the statement continued.
The top flight side also asked Kenyans to pray for their star man.
“Let’s keep “Makudhe” and his family in our prayers. We will update you more on his progress,” the statement ended.
Khwasira was a vital member of the 2008 KPL champions, and his absence leaves the club in danger of being relegated.
Mathare, who has only played two games so far, sits at the bottom of the log with two points.
