Cameroon in Mourning as Former PSG Star Dies

Former Cameroon midfielder Modeste M’Bami died on Saturday, January 7, 2023, after suffering a heart attack.

The powerful midfielder had successful stints with a number of top European clubs including Paris Saint Germain (PSG), and Spanish-based side Almeria.

M’Bami, who died at the age of 40, helped PSG bag the Coupe de France title in 2004, and 2006.

The multiple Ligue 1 champions sent a message of consolation to his friends and family.

“Paris Saint-Germain learned with deep sadness the death today of our former player Modeste M’Bami.

“The club sends its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones,” read part of the statement from PSG.

President of the Cameroon football federation, Samuel Eto’o, also reacted to M,Bami’s demise.

“You left too soon,” stated the former Indomitable Lions skipper.

At the international level, M’Bami made 37 appearances for Cameroon and managed to find the back of the net three times.

He was part of the star-studded squad that triumphed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. 

M’Bami was also part of the team that reached the FIFA Confederations Cup finals in 2003, losing the match to France.

He was once approached by the Indomitable Lions to be their tactician in November 2009, but she turned down the chance.
