Kenyan Teenagers Outshine Rivals in Regional Tennis Tourney

Kenyan teenagers arrived in Nairobi on Monday, January 16, after topping the medal standings at the just concluded 2023 East African Junior tennis tournament staged in Bujumbura, Burundi.

The team which is made up of under 14 and under 16 players amassed a total of four medals in the competition which is recognized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Kenya was ranked top after collecting 1200 points with the hosts and Uganda registering second and third positions respectively.

The latter garnered 710 points while Burundi finished the tournament with 1040 points.

Kenyan youngsters won two gold medals, one silver, and a bronze medal.

The Kenya Lawn Tennis Association (KLTA) announced the arrival of the stars in Nairobi with the caption "Home sweet home. The future is bright."

The girls’ team hammered all their opponents from Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi to bag two gold medals in the under-14 and 16 categories.

On the other hand, their male counterparts managed to secure a bronze medal in the under-16 category, with the under-14 players settling for silver.

The girls’ under-14 team was made up of Seline Ahoya, Nancy Kawira, and Michelle Murage while the Boys' squad comprised Ayush Bhandari, Jeff Okuku, and Malli Muondu.

Melissa Mwakha, Mercyline Oresha, and Sophia Nelimah were part of the under-16 girls' team.

Alvin Kimathi, Brian Odingo, and Baraka Ominde represented the country in the under-16 Boys’ category.

They were coached by Angella Okutoyi’s uncle Allan Atola and Rosemary Owino.
