Legendary Kenyan Boxing Coach Peter Mwarangu Dies

Famed Kenyan boxing coach Peter Mwarangu is dead.

Kenya Boxing Federation (KBF) confirmed the sad news on Monday, January 22, 2023.

“Long-serving Hit Squad head Coach Peter Mwarangu has passed on.

“The Boxing Federation of Kenya sends a message of sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of the late Coach Mwarangu.

“Rest in Peace (RIP) Coach Mwarangu,” a statement from the federation read.

Popular Kenyan journalist Ali Manzu also confirmed the news, stating that the late Mwarangu passed away after a long illness. 

“Legendary boxing coach Peter Mwarangu dies aged 82 after a long illness, family says.

“He will be remembered for nurturing Steve Muchoki, winner of the World Boxing Council (WBC) in 1978,” ended Manzu.

The late Mwarangu enjoyed a successful coaching career that lasted for over 30 years.

He shaped the careers of some of the big names in Kenya's boxing industry including the likes of Chris Sande and Robert Wangila.

Wangila won Kenya a gold medal (welterweight category) at the 1988 Olympic Games that was held in Seoul, South Korea.

Sande also bagged a bronze medal (middleweight category) during that historic event.
