Kenyan football tournament Kothbiro has been hit with a major blow due to lack of funds.

In an announcement made by the tournament's chairperson Paul Ojenge, the management postponed the matches as it sought money to continue running it.

The final between Leads United from Kangemi and Team Korogez of Gikomba was set to take place on Saturday, February 4.

“It is in this regard that we (the management) regret to announce that this season's finals will not be played on Saturday, February 4, 2023 as earlier announced as we seek funding for the finals.

“This decision has come after deep consultations with the teams and the match officials," part of the statement read.

Paul Ojenga also called on well-wishers to come out and support the tournament.

He highlighted that the purpose of the tournament was to help build and nurture football talents at the grassroots level.

The Kothbiro chairman, however, did not give an official date for the final adding that it would be announced soon.

"We thank God for the great season we have had. We have not had any hitches apart from the financial setbacks. We hope that the country has seen what football is made of and that we will be able to attract sponsors for the finals and even the future," Ojenge stated after the semi-finals.

This year's tournament attracted more than 50 teams forcing the organisers to go for playoffs.
