Kenya’s quest for a first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics hit a dead end as the three participants in the 1000m missed the podium in a race won by Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega.

The World 5000m silver medalist burst in the last 200m of the race to stay clear of pre-race favourite Joshua Cheptegei who settled for silver and Jacob Kiplimo(bronze), both of Uganda.

Barega won the race in a time of 27:43.22 with Cheptegei coming second in a time of 27:43.63.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Rodgers Kwemoi was the first Kenyan in the race after finishing seventh in 27:50.06

Late inclusion Rhonex Kipruto finished 9th with Weldon Langat finishing 20th in the hot Tokyo weather.
