Ulinzi Stars defender George Omondi will be out of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) league for 12 months after undergoing an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery.
Omondi was injured in the 1-0 win against Nzoia in May 2021 after a collision with Nzoia’s midfielder Hillary Simiyu midway through the first half but managed to shake off the injury and finish the game.
The club has also confirmed that he will also miss the whole of the 2021/2022 campaign that is set to kick off in late September 2021.
Despite his injury, he went ahead and featured in five more games, two of which were against Sofapaka and Nairobi City Stars in the FKF Cup, and three in the league against Bandari, Sofapaka, and Tusker FC.
Omondi managed to help his team win three games, including beating Sofapaka to advance to the FKF Cup Round of 16, losing to only Nairobi City Stars and Tusker FC.
Omondi joined the Soldiers in 2018 from Liberty Academy, being thrown into the first team
immediately in a 4-2 win against Zoo FC in his debut in the Kenyan Premier League.(KPL)
The youthful defender had earlier revealed that his pep talks with the Ulinzi’s head coach, Dunstan Nyaudo, had prepared him for the big day in the first taste of the KPL.
"Nyaudo talked to me personally ahead of the game against Zoo FC. He told me the areas I needed to polish. So going onto the pitch, I knew I had his backing as well as the support of my teammates, and that made it a bit easier," stated Omondi.
