
Argentine forward Lionel Messi was named the 2022 BBC Sports Personality’s World Sport Star of the Year on Monday night, December 19.
According to organizers, the 35-year-old was crowned because of his remarkable achievements this year.
Messi recently helped his country win Qatar's 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The father of three scored two goals in regulation time to help the South Americans register a 3-3 draw with France.
He also scored in the penalty shootouts to guide Argentine to their third FIFA World Cup title.
Away from the final, the Paris Saint-German forward won five man-of-the-match trophies in Qatar, the highest among the players who participated in the event.
The multiple Ballon D’or winner was generous enough to give one of the awards to former teammate Sergio Kun Aguero who was forced to retire in 2021 due to a medical condition.
After the World Cup final, Messi stated that he is one of the luckiest individuals on the surface of the earth.
"It's everyone's dream when they're little. I've been lucky enough to achieve everything and what I was missing, I found here," he stated on Sunday.
The FC Barcelona legend also announced that they would not retire from international football.
There were speculations that the Qatari tournament would be Messi’s last involvement with the La Albiceleste.
