The Kenya women’s basketball team is set to battle it out for a single 2023 AfroBasket ticket in the Africa Zone 5 Championship.

Six nations, including powerhouse Egypt, hosts Uganda, South Sudan and Rwanda will grace the event.

Kenya Lionesses, who are the defending champions, are scheduled to open their campaign against hosts Uganda on Tuesday, February 14 at 7:30 pm.

The chances of the Kenyan queens qualifying for consecutive AfroBasket championships have been significantly reduced with the absence of star player Felmas Koranga.

Apart from Koranga, most of the players who graced the last edition have been retained.

The workaholic Medina Okoth, sharpshooter Rose Ouma, and mercurial forward Victoria Reynolds will spearhead Kenya’s qualifying campaign.

Victor wanyama's sister Mercy Wanyama and dependable skipper Melissa Otieno are also expected to play a key role in Kenya Lionesses' title charge.

Egypt, the zone’s sleeping giant, would be seeking to reclaim their place as the region's best team.

The winner of the Zone 5 qualifiers will join West African sides Nigeria, Mali, Cameroon and Senegal who have already qualified for the AfroBasket tournament.
