Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier was over the weekend, part of the African football leaders invited to a meeting by CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the CAF Executive Committee meeting, was graced by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

It brought together representatives from top clubs across the continent, among them Al Ahly, Enyimba, Wydad Casablanca, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, among others.

Top on the agenda for CAF was to bring the club representatives up to speed with the proposed CAF Super League.

Initial proposals presented by CAF with the guidance of FIFA suggest that the league is envisioned to be an elite competition played by 24 clubs.

The 24, in the proposals, shall be grouped into three, with eight clubs in every group, playing in a round-robin format on a home and away basis.

Top five clubs from each of the groups, along with one best loser, shall proceed to the tournament’s round of 16.

Clubs intending to participate shall also be required to have a women club as well as a youth academy.

These proposals are however still in their infancy, as the kick-off dates have been tentatively set for September 2023, at a time when proper structures for the league shall have been established.

The league is also expected not to in any way affect the local leagues where the clubs are domiciled as well as the ever-vibrant CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederations Cup.

Gor Mahia has played continental football for the past four seasons. Most recently, they took part in the CAF Confederations Cup, after winning the FKF Cup in 2021.
