Ali Dia
One of the most ludicrous substitutions ever made in football was that of Ali Dia who was playing for Southampton.
The then Southampton manager Graeme Souness received a phone call from someone posing as former AC Milan superstar George Weah.
He was instructed to introduce Dia in the match. He featured in the match for 53 minutes where he was completely wasteful.
The manager was forced to make another substitution to replace him. It was established later that Dia had lied about the person who had made the call as it was not George Weah.
Steven Gerrard
In 2015, Liverpool were facing rivals Manchester United with the then captain Steven Gerrard starting the match on the bench.
Liverpool went into half time ahead of ‘ the Red Devils’ with a 1-0 scoreline, Brendan Rodgers who was the team's manager saw it fit to introduce his captain to strengthen his squad.
However, 60 minutes after his introduction Gerrard was sent off after he committed a dangerous foul against United’s Ander Herrera.
Emmanuel Eboue
In a footballer's career it's very humiliating to be referred to as a sub who was subbed off; however , this was the case of Arsenal's player Emmanuel Eboue.
Eboue, in a match between Arsenal and Wigan was introduced as a substitute before he was replaced again.
The Ivorian was wasteful during the match with many misplaced passes and poor defending resulting in him being subbed off as fans jeered him as he exited the pitch.
David Luiz
David Luiz who was known for his defensive prowess is another victim of what can be termed as a wasteful substitution.
Luiz was playing for Arsenal then as they faced English Premier League heavyweights Manchester City.
The Brazilian in 30 minutes of his introduction gave away two easy goals to Manchester City and was also sent off.
