Chelsea Football Club woes have worsened after Roman Abramovich was disqualified as director of club as part of sanctions being applied by the UK government, the Premier League reports.

The Russian billionaire was sanctioned by the UK government over Russia's invasion of Ukraine and his ties to Russia President, Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich will no longer be permitted to have any involvement in the running of the club.

The latest developments were announced through a Premier League statement issued on March 12 by the Premier League Spokesperson.

"Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club.

"The Board’s decision does not impact on the club’s ability to train and play its fixtures, as set out under the terms of a licence issued by the Government which expires on 31 May 2022,” the statement read.

The 55-year-old has in the past noted that he was ready to put Chelsea up for sale after owning it for 19 years.

Abramovich will be forced to part ways with his club after calls for Russian oligarchs to be sanctioned.

The UK government issued Chelsea with a special licence that will allow it to take part in the remaining Premier League fixtures.

Currently, Chelsea is not permitted to buy, sell players or offer new contracts, with the shirt sponsor, Three, requesting the club to temporarily suspend its deal.
