Luis Suarez Beats Messi to Top Scorer Position

Luis Suarez has moved ahead of Lionel Messi as the top scorer in South America World Cup qualifiers after scoring his 29th goal on Tuesday, March 29.

Suarez shot a bicycle kick that saw Uruguay win 2-0 against Chile.

"Special night, special game, special shirt, and a goal,” wrote Suarez on social media besides a picture of him holding his jersey from the match.

“What more could I ask for in unique and unforgettable moments for my country?”

According to the South American Football Confederation, Suarez’s 29 goals came from 62 games, two ahead of Messi.

He had previously shared the record with the Argentine captain but toppled him with his spectacular strike, 11 minutes to the final whistle.

Messi failed to score during his 60th match in Ecuador, in a match that saw Argentina settle for a 1-1 draw.

Federico Valverde scored the second goal for Uruguay, a few minutes to the end of the match.

Uruguay finished third in the qualifying group, coming after Brazil and Argentina in the CONMEBOL table.
