19-year-old former Sofapaka midfielder Wisdom Naya passed away on Friday morning, July 15.

Naya travelled to India in January this year where he had his leg amputated after it was infected with cancer.

The prodigy had been suffering from a thigh tumour known as Soft Tissue Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affected the tissues that connect, support and surround other body structures.

“We are saddened to have lost our former midfielder Wisdom Naya. The youngster has passed on due to soft tissue, Sarcoma. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Naya,” the statement read.

Former Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga donated Ksh500,000 for his medical treatment.

After a successful fundraiser, the young midfielder travelled to India for specialized treatment.

Naya was hopeful that he would eventually beat the disease. However, he developed complications that affected other organs before he succumbed to the disease.

The deceased was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the 2018 Copa Coca-Cola Under-16 Africa Cup of Nations as a student at St Anthony's Boys High School.

He later joined Kenya Premier League side Sofapaka on a three-year deal contract but never featured in any competitive game before he got diagnosed with the disease.
