Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga scored his first goal of the season in Al Duhail’s 3-0 win over leaders Al Arabi in the Qatar Stars League (QSL) on Wednesday night.

Olunga who emerged the league’s top scorer in the 2021/2022 season had to wait until the 75th minute to get his first goal of the season.

The 28-year-old superbly scored from the spot kick sending Al Arabi shot stopper for an ice cream. Unlike other footballers who celebrate after ending their goal drought, Olunga did not move after netting the penalty.

He just stood in the penalty box with a smile brimming on his face as teammates surrounded him, congratulating him for the achievement.

Although the goal came courtesy of a penalty, he can finally feel relieved as he kickstarts his golden boot race campaign. The former goal poacher had not scored a single goal for his club in the last four matches.

The Engineer as he is commonly known by Kenyan football fans did not feature in the first two games of the 2022/2023 season due to an injury.

Al Arabi defender Abdulla Issa had opened the scoring for Al Duhail when he put the goal in the back of his own net in the 9th minute.

The Hernan Crespo coached side netted their second goal in the 52nd minute thanks to a lovely header from Nam Tae-Hee. The South-Korean midfielder got away from four Al Arabi defenders before heading the goal into an empty net.

The win helped Al Duhail climb up to second in the QSL log with 10 points, behind leaders Al Arabi and Al Wakrah. Al Arabi and Al Wakrah have amassed 12 and 11 points respectively.

The former Upper Hill School student will have to wait for a while before playing for Harambee Stars due to the current ban that was imposed on Kenya by the world football governing body FIFA in February this year.

Olunga who joined Al-Duhail in 2021 has previously played for a number of top teams across the globe including Kashiwa Reysol, Girona, Guizhou Zhicheng and  Swedish-based side Djurgården.
