Kenya ended the first leg of the 2023 World Rugby 7s series in dramatic fashion on Sunday, November 6, as star player Kevin Wekesa was shown a red card in the first half.

The 33-year-old scored the opening try of the match to give Kenya the lead against Uruguay, but lack of discipline made him to be sent off a few minutes later.

Wekesa received two yellow cards within a minute to make the test harder for the Damian McGrath coached side.

His red card forced Shujaa to play the entire second half with 6 men, allowing Uruguay to bounce back and win the match 7-10.

Kevin was on the scoresheet earlier in the first half after a brilliant work from Billy Odhiambo.

Antony Omondi successfully converted the resulting kick to earn Shujaa an extra two points.

With the defeat, Kenya, which failed to pick up a win at the tournament, finished at the bottom of the standings.

“We exit the Hong Kong 7s after losing the 13th place semifinal 7-10 to Uruguay.

“Tony Omondi converted Kevin Wekesa's try as Uruguay scored twice through Mateo Vinals and Bautista Basso.

“We had earlier lost 0-43 to New Zealand in the Challenge Trophy quarterfinals,” read a statement from Shujaa.

Shujaa’s focus now shifts to the upcoming Dubai 7s scheduled to take place from Friday, December 2 to Sunday, December 3.
