AS FAR Crowned African Queens in Dramatic Champions League Match

Moroccan side AS FAR thrashed Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 in a dramatic match staged at the Prince Stade Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, to clinch their maiden CAF Women’s Champions League title.

AS FAR opened the scoring in the 15th minute through star player Fatima Tagnout.

Mamelodi Sundowns skipper Zanele Nhlapho committed a foul in the penalty box earlier in the second half, earning AS FAR a penalty which was scored by Ibtissam Jraïdi.

The 29-year-old added two more goals at the closing stages to finish the match with a hat -trick.

Apart from being named the woman of the match in the final, Jraïdi also bagged the golden boot award after finding the net six times in five matches. 

The South Africans, who were the defending champions played for most part of the match with nine players after two of their players were red carded.

The center referee sent two of their players for an early shower with Rhoda Mulaudzi receiving a straight red card in the 36th minute after a reckless challenge. 

Nhlapho was also sent off in the second half after receiving a second yellow card.

Mamelodi had narrowly edged past Tanzanian side Simba Queens to book their place in the final.

Kenya did not have any representative this year since the country was serving a FIFA ban as a result of government interference in football activities.

Vihiga Queens, who won the 2021/2022 Kenya Women’s Premier League (KWPL) title were to represent the country in the prestigious tournament. 

The Western-based side took part in the inaugural edition which was held in Cairo, Egypt in 2021.
