Djokovic Recounts Deportation Incident Over Vaccine Impasse

Tennis star Novak Djokovic reminisced about his deportation incident from Australia- noting that it would be etched in his memory for the rest of his life.

The 35-year-old Serbian was detained and deported from Australia in January 2022, after failing to get COVID-19 vaccination.

Djokovic missed the 2022 Australian Open, however, he will be participating in the 2023 edition.

"You can't forget those events, It's one of these things that stick with you, it stays with you for I guess the rest of your life,” Djokovic stated.

Djokovic added that it was the first time he was deported from a country and would not wish to experience the same again.

He added by returning to Australia showed his feeling toward the country and participating there.

Djokovic also noted that the deportation incident was a valuable life experience for him but he already moved on. 

"I was really hoping that I'm going to have my permission back to get back into Australia and play here because it's a country where I've had tremendous success in my career," he added.

The Serbian tennis player is a 21-time grand slam champion who has won nine Australian Open titles.

Australian will take place between January 16, and January 29, 2023.
