Talanta Hela: Inside Govt's Plan to Monetise Sports

The government has revealed plans to rebuild and monetise Sports through a plan known as ‘TALANTA HELA’.  

According to the Draft 2023 Budget Policy Statement, released on Wednesday, January 18, the government reiterated its support for the sports industry.  

The policy statement equally highlighted President William Ruto's commitment to the bottom-up approach toward the growth of football from the grassroots level.

“To supports the sports industry, the Government has moved with speed to get the country’s football back, protect Kenya’s proud athletics pedigree from doping, and streamline the collection and distribution of royalties to our artists. 

“Through the revolutionary ‘TALANTA HELA’ Plan, the Government will rebuild and monetise sports and creative industry,” part of the statement read. 

It was highlighted that the National Government will work with County Governments to invest heavily in youth football. 

The policy statement equally disclosed the government’s arrangement to launch the Bottom-up football tournament was at an advanced stage. 

Released by the Ministry of National Treasury and Economic Planning, the policy statement proposes the introduction of a Bottom-up football tournament to be contested by under-19 teams from all 47 Counties. 

During the previous December 12, 2022, Jamhuri Day celebrations, President Ruto directed the ministry of sports to hold the finals during the celebrations. 

“I suggest to the ministry that the finals of these inter-county teams should be held on Jamhuri day every year so that we can celebrate the teams from across Kenya,” Ruto stated then. 

President Ruto also added that his administration recognised sports and arts as a major industry that can employ millions of youths and promote economic growth.
