Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) declared itself ready to host the 2023 Africa Cup Club Championships scheduled to take place from February 13 to 19.

22 teams will compete in the seven-day tournament at the Sikh Union Club with 12 men and 10 women teams.

In the women's field, Kenya will have representation from three teams Strathmore University Scorpions, Blazers, and Kisumu-based Lakers.

However, only two men teams will represent the country Butali and Police HC.

Speaking on Thursday, February 9, KHU chairperson Nashon Randiek explained that the federation was unable to field a third men's team.

"We had requested a chance to field a third Kenyan men's team but that was not possible. Requirements for the championship dictate that the fixtures provide for a rest day for individual teams and one full day rest for the tournament and that would have been a problem with more than 12 teams.

“That forced us to have the third Kenyan team removed, although previously approved. There is still a slim chance they could feature if all the registered teams do not make the trip," Randiek highlighted.

Randiek also revealed that the federation was not unable to ask the government for financial assistance because it received short notice for the hosting rights which and the event was not part of its annual calendar of events.

“We have, however, managed to swim through the challenges and the tournament will be held," Randiek added.

Other African teams participating include Uganda with four teams, the same as Nigeria and Ghana.

Egypt will field three teams while Zimbabwe and Tanzania will have one team each.
