Singore Girls: Inside School That Has Produced Top Female Athletes

A number of schools in Kenya have earned the reputation of producing top athletes that go on to achieve elite level success on the pitch, track and court.

The likes of Kakamega High School and St. Anthony High School, Kitale have developed some of the country's talented footballers who became Harambee Stars players and landed lucrative contracts abroad.

Singore Girls High School is their equivalent in athletics, churning out great athletes that have gone to achieve international success.

TeamKenya.co.ke takes a look at some of the elite athletes who attended  the school located near the slopes of the Great East African Rift Valley, in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.

 Vivian Cheruiyot

The four-time world champion is one of the most successful female athletes in history. Cheruiyot, who is nicknamed the Pocket Rocket joined Singore Girls in the year 2000.

Since then, Cheruiyot, who recently switched to road racing, has won numerous titles including an Olympic gold medal, 2 Olympic silver medals, 4 World Championship gold medals and 3 World Cross Country Championships gold medals. 

Janet Jepkosgei

Janet Jepkosgei, fondly known as Eldoret Express, is also a Singore Girls High School alumni.

Jepkosgei made history in 2007 in Osaka, Japan when she ran a calculated race to become the first Kenyan woman to win a 800m world Championship title.

The 38-year-old also has an Olympic silver medal, 2 world Championship silver medals, and a  Commonwealth Games gold medal under her belt. 

Jepkosgei recently ventured into coaching and she is currently sharpening upcoming Kenyan athletes including Mary Moraa, who bagged her maiden senior international title at the 2022 CommonWealth Games held in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Sally Barsosio

Sally Barsosio, the first female athlete to bag a world championship title, also attended Singore Girls High School.

Barsosio broke into the limelight while still a student at the school when she won a bronze medal for Kenya at the 1993 World Athletics Championship staged in Stuttgart, Germany.

At the 1997 edition, Barsosio, then a form four student, bagged her maiden world title when she stormed to victory in the 10,000m race.

Viola Kibiwott

Viola Kibiwott was Cheruiyot’s classmate during their time at Singore Girls High School. Kibiwott has won a couple of international races including three junior world titles. 

The 38-year-old won the World Cross Country Junior title on consecutive occasions at the 2001 and 2002 editions staged in Belgium and Ireland respectively.

Some of the other top athletes who have gone through Singore Girls High School  include Lydia Cheromei, Irene Lamika,  Hilda Kibet and Silvia Jebiwott Kibet.
