A win for Arsenal against United has taken Arteta's team six points ahead of Ralf Rangnick's side, with still a game in hand.
The win also has propelled the Gunners into the fourth position ahead of Tottenham who have a game later in the day.
Arsenal's goals were scored by Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka through a penalty and a Granit Xhaka screamer.
Man United’s solitary goal was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo who was making his first appearance since the demise of his son.
Despite the loss, Ronaldo marked his return with a goal which was his 100th Premier League goal.
One of the highlights of the match was when Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty.
Manchester United interim manager, Ralph Rangnick, noted that his side after the loss stands no chance of finishing in the top four.
"For me, even before the game it was not very likely, but after today's result, it is gone. I think we showed an improved performance but in the end a disappointing result. I think we bounced back well from the early goal and had numerous chances in both halves to score more goals. I thought the weak part of our performance today was we didn't defend well inside and around our box," Rangnik noted.
