Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu was one of the victims of the tragic Turkey earthquake that claimed over 20000 lives.

It had earlier been reported by Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, the Turkish journalist who first broke the news about his missing, that Atsu was safe but injured.

“Christian Atsu has been pulled from the wreckage alive!” part of his statement read then.

However, it was later confirmed that it was a case of mistaken identity.

The 31-year-old, who penned a deal with Hatayspor in 2022, was not the only member of the club who was trapped. Some of the club’s officials are yet to be found.

Atsu, previously had short stints with English Premier League sides Newcastle United and Chelsea.

The earthquake which occurred on Monday morning, February 6, demolished most of the buildings in the country.

The subsequent earthquakes also struck Syria’s Northern region. A 7.8 magnitude tremor was followed by a 7.5 magnitude quake.

A major rescue operation is currently taking place in the country.

Some European nations including France and Greece mobilized search- and rescue teams to travel to the affected areas.

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared seven days of national mourning following the natural disaster.
